SHIVA MURALI

Shiva obtained his BMSc in Honours Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) from Western University in 2021. Shiva’s interest in stem cell research sparked from taking multiple Stem Cell courses during his undergraduate degree. He was fascinated by the great potential of stem cells in medicine and looked to apply his theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. He was drawn to the Bhatia Program due to the lab’s translational nature and the direct clinical impact of research findings.

Shiva’s current project focuses on developing a prognostic indicator to predict hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) success in AML patients by characterizing leukemic progenitor frequency and gene expression signatures. Shiva enjoys the lab’s welcoming environment, where newcomers are given numerous opportunities to learn from their approachable peers and ultimately feel confident in their abilities.

Fun Fact: Shiva was a ball boy for the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Toronto for 7 years. The picture shown is Shiva with Rafael Nadal!
